'Phase-in' of summer activities begins Monday for BA athletes, coaches

Detailed plan presented to coaches Wednesday morning

Strength and conditioning coaches Cody Ellett (foreground) and Cole Moos will be sanitizing equipment regularly as workouts begin Monday for BA athletes.

Broken Arrow Public Schools athletic administrators met with coaches Wednesday, to provide professional development for the “phase-in” plan for athletic summer conditioning, clinics, camps and tryouts.

Face-to-face contact with athletes will begin Monday with secondary level athletic teams. Phase I focuses on strength and conditioning safety measures. Teams will begin strength and conditioning on Monday, while volleyball is hosting high school tryouts at Centennial Middle School Monday and Tuesday. Middle School volleyball tryouts are Wednesday and Thursday. Fast pitch softball tryouts are scheduled for June 15-16. Girls basketball tryouts are June 21-23.

Phase I runs June 8-21. Phase I requires all athletes to check in and have their temperature taken prior to participating in any activity. Coaches and students also will be required to complete a COVID-19 survey each day and practice social distancing. The plan consists of nearly 20 precautionary items which will help prevent and protect athletes and coaches from Corona Virus infection.

Phase II is June 22 – July 15. Many of the same guidelines will remain in place for Phase II. Camps and clinics will be allowed during this time.

The meeting included instruction on proper sanitation protocols from Charlie Abbott, BAPS Director of Plant Operations. Daniel Stewart, BA Athletic Trainer, also discussed the evaluation process and protocol for a student with a temperature of 100.4-degrees or higher.

Broken Arrow’s plan was adopted after examining several proposals put forth by universities, professional sports programs and government guidelines. The plan was tailored to meet the needs specific to BA student-athletes and coaches, said Steve Dunn, BAPS Executive Director of Athletics.
