Growth and Development presentations scheduled for January 2024

Developmentally appropriate growth and development education is provided as part of the Broken Arrow Public Schools health curriculum. Each year, a presentation is given by the school nurse to students regarding this topic.

The goals of the BAPS growth and development presentations are:

  • To develop a comfortable and trusting classroom atmosphere so that discussions and learning about this topic can take place
  • To provide accurate information about the physical changes of puberty and to help students develop positive attitudes about their changing bodies
  • To encourage and enhance communication between parents and their children about these topics

The course content at the elementary level includes:

  • 4th Grade: The fourth grade growth and development presentation is offered to girls only and focuses on the physical and emotional changes that occur as girls enter puberty, menstruation (not reproduction), personal hygiene, and the importance of exercise and good nutrition. This presentation is scheduled for Friday, January 19. (Girls Presentation)

  • 5th Grade: Fifth grade growth and development presentations contain information about changes that occur during puberty and include a film and a question and answer session provided by the school nurse. Topics include physical and emotional changes during adolescence, hygiene, and nutrition needs. Fifth grade girls and boys are separated for these classes. These presentations are scheduled for Friday, January 19. (Girls Presentation) (Boys Presentation)

Broken Arrow Public Schools strongly believes that the teaching of human growth and development education is primarily the responsibility of parents. The BAPS program is designed to assist parents with that responsibility by presenting a developmentally appropriate, straightforward, fact-based program of instruction. Curriculum is available for inspection by parents. For additional information, please contact Ms. Kimball, school nurse, at ekimball@baschools.org or 918-505-5260.

Parents may decline the opportunity for their student to participate in these presentations by notifying the school health office in writing prior to the date of the presentation.
