‘All Things Virtual Academy’ parent forum to take place March 30, deadline to enroll is April 23
The Virtual Academy of Broken Arrow Public Schools is hosting an “All Things Virtual Academy” parent forum via Zoom at 6 p.m. on March 30. This forum will discuss the nuts and bolts of the Virtual Academy, while also giving families the opportunities to learn important strategies for student success. Enrollment for the 2021-22 school year will be made available on April 1 until April 23.
“The Virtual Academy is an ideal option for students who prefer a smaller learning environment, one-on-one communication with teachers and the flexibility to choose when and where they work on their courses,” Virtual Academy Principal Caleb Starr said. “Whether your child is currently enrolled in the program or if you just want to learn more, we encourage you to tune in as we go over the day in the life of a BAVA student.”
In response to the global pandemic, Broken Arrow Public Schools expanded its full-time virtual education program to ALL Broken Arrow students in grades Pre-K through 12 last fall.
"Broken Arrow Public Schools was pleased to be able to provide Virtual Academy to all students in response to the pandemic,” Starr said. “It was in those early pivotal months where we took critical notes on improving hiccups and addressing any shortcomings, knowing our approach would evolve and change considerably through input from our patrons. We hope this forum will help address any questions or concerns for anyone interested in the Virtual Academy."
This program allows students to enroll in multiple ways:
- Full-time: Students in grades PreK-12 can complete 100 percent of their coursework online.
- Blended Enrollment: Students in grades 6-12 can enroll in the Virtual Academy and still participate in an elective course at their school site, which may include fine arts or athletics. (NOTE: Virtual courses may meet NCAA requirements if certain criteria is met. Student athletes are encouraged to check with their school counselor when considering a virtual course.)
Online elementary curriculum includes English, social studies, math, science, and interactive courses like art and physical education. Middle school curriculum includes English, social studies, math, science, Spanish, art appreciation, study skills and health. Middle school students may also be able to participate in unique electives such as band or orchestra. Students in grades 6-12 can complete 100% of their classes online or can take advantage of the blended enrollment option.
The Virtual Academy meets all graduation requirements.
