Upcoming Growth and Development presentations scheduled for October

Developmentally appropriate growth and development and sexual health education is provided as part of the Broken Arrow Public Schools health curriculum. Each year, a presentation is given by the school nurse to students regarding these topics.

The goals of the BAPS growth and development and sexual health presentations are:

  • To develop a comfortable and trusting classroom atmosphere so that discussions and learning about these topics can take place
  • To provide accurate information about the physical changes of puberty and to help students develop positive attitudes about their changing bodies
  • To provide students with accurate information about how to be healthy and avoid human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI)
  • To encourage and enhance communication between parents and their children about these topics

The course content at the middle levels include:

  • 6th Grade: Sixth grade growth and development classes contain information about changes that occur during adolescence and include a film and a question and answer session provided by the school nurse. Sixth graders will also receive AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) prevention education in accordance with Oklahoma law. Sixth grade girls and boys are separated for these classes. This presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 17. (Girls Presentation) (Boys Presentation)

  • 7th Grade:  Seventh grade classes contain in-depth information regarding AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) prevention education in accordance with Oklahoma law. The instruction is provided by the school nurse. Seventh grade girls and boys are separated for this presentation. This presentation is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13. (Presentation)

  • 8th Grade: Eighth grade classes contain information regarding the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, with the focus on abstinence. The instruction is provided by the school nurse. Eighth grade girls and boys are separated for this presentation. This presentation is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 5. (Presentation)

Broken Arrow Public Schools strongly believes that the teaching of human growth and development and sexual health education is primarily the responsibility of parents. The BAPS program is designed to assist parents with that responsibility by presenting a developmentally appropriate, straightforward, fact-based program of instruction. Curriculum is available for inspection by parents. For additional information, please contact Mrs. Deem, school nurse, at adeem@baschools.org or 918-259-4340.

Parents may decline the opportunity for their student to participate in these presentations by notifying the school health office in writing prior to the date of the presentation.
