Honoring Black History Month at OMS
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, our 8th graders had the privilege of hearing from Mrs. LaTonya Pratt, who shared the incredible story of Selma Burke—a trailblazing sculptor and educator.
Mrs. Pratt captivated our students with an inspiring message about Mrs. Burke’s dedication and perseverance. Did you know that Selma Burke sculpted a bas-relief portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which became the model for his image on the dime? What an amazing legacy!
To honor her contributions, each student received a dime as a reminder to work hard and never give up on their dreams—just like Selma Burke!

On Oct. 30, nearly 1,500 7th graders from each middle school across our district gathered at the Broken Arrow Event Center for our inaugural “Sky is the Limit” Aviation & Aerospace Career Fair! With almost 30 vendors on site, students engaged in hands-on activities and discovered the world of aviation, an industry that ranks as Oklahoma's 2nd largest.
Students experienced flight simulators, learned about drones and their essential roles at organizations like the Broken Arrow Police Department and Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), and heard from some of our city’s large employers, such as FlightSafety International and CymSTAR, showcasing how Broken Arrow leads in innovation and engineering. We were also excited to have our Board of Education Vice President, Jerry Denton, join us with Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. to highlight future career pathways in aviation. Additionally, representatives from local colleges and Tulsa Tech were on hand to discuss education opportunities available to students right here in Oklahoma. Students from Vanguard Academy of Broken Arrow were also there to highlight Robotics and their flight simulator.
A huge thank you to our vendors and partners for making this event possible! We’re grateful to Chick-fil-A at 71st and Lynn Lane for donating 150 boxed meals to our hardworking volunteers, and to Civil Air Patrol's Oklahoma Wing and WeStreet Credit Union for their generous sponsorships.
At Broken Arrow Public Schools, the sky is truly the limit! This was an unforgettable day that will inspire the next generation of aviation and aerospace professionals.
