Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that our 8th grade students are nearing their final semester of middle school. Throughout their years at BAPS and Oliver Middle School, students have explored a variety of career options.
Below is important information regarding high school graduation requirements and career pathways. Although it is lengthy, we highly encourage you to read it thoroughly, as all details are important.
They have used Defined Careers, a comprehensive career-exploration platform that includes a personalized career-matching assessment, an academic SMART goal, and two career-exploration projects each year. Students have also attended career fairs and learned about the pathways and academies available to them in high school through Broken Arrow Public Schools. All of these experiences—both in and out of the classroom—fulfill the state requirement for completing an Individualized Career and Academic Plan (ICAP).
As you may be aware, Oklahoma’s graduation requirements have changed beginning with the Class of 2030, which includes our current 8th graders. Students are now required to complete six Pathway Units—high school courses aligned with the student’s ICAP.
To help prepare families for upcoming high school enrollment at the Freshman Academy, students must select a career cluster pathway. More detailed guidance will be provided during the enrollment process in January. Please be sure to pay close attention to communication when we return in January, as important enrollment information and next steps will be shared at that time.
TODAY
Today, our 8th graders watched a video from the Oliver counselors explaining career cluster pathways, updated graduation requirements, and why selecting a pathway is important. Students also received access to the Career Cluster list and were encouraged to take it home for discussion with their families.
NEXT WEEK
Next Wednesday, December 10th, counselors will visit 8th grade U.S. History classes to assist students in choosing their “Pathway for Now.” Please remember that ICAP is meant to grow with the student; it is updated each year. As long as a student’s selected courses align with their career goal at the time they are taken, their six required Pathway Units can reflect their evolving interests.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU/FAMILY ACTION STEPS
We encourage you to talk with your students this weekend and help them select a “Pathway for Now” from the Career Clusters listed below. At minimum, please discuss what career they might choose at this time—counselors can help identify the corresponding cluster during Wednesday’s visit.
Below are links to resources that will support you in your understanding.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s counselor. Please know that this decision does not lock your child into a long-term pathway, but instead provides a helpful starting point for intentional 9th-grade course selection aligned with graduation requirements and future goals.
