Broken Arrow PTA Council Legislative Advocacy

The National Parent Teacher Association is the oldest and largest child advocacy association in America, comprised of more than 24,000 local PTAs and 4 million members. As part of PTA’s mission – every child, one voice – members work at the national, state and local levels to promote legislation benefiting all students. From organizing candidate forums to registering voters at school events, the Broken Arrow PTA Council contributes to this advocacy effort in a variety of ways.

The Broken Arrow PTA Council organized and hosted three candidate forums in the 2018 election cycle, prepared a voters’ guide for the 2019 City Council/School Board election, teamed with Union and Tulsa PTA councils to host a regional legislative roundtable and attended Oklahoma PTA Day at the Capitol to speak with legislators. Legislative chairs at the local unit level share legislative updates in school newsletters, invite lawmakers into the classroom and promote voting.

Advocacy is integral to PTA’s mission, and Broken Arrow PTA Council strives to support that mission by keeping the lines of communication with legislators open and by keeping parents informed about legislative issues. PTA continues to encourage members to advocate for children. Advocacy can take many forms, including writing to legislators, raising awareness of a cause through events or discussing issues with friends.
