BA’s Return to Learn Reentry Plan - UPDATED JULY 29

The health and safety of our students and staff continue to remain our top priority as we prepare for the upcoming school year. Below you will find important safety protocols that will be in place to limit exposure and transmission of COVID-19.

All plans and procedures are subject to change as new information is available or if positive cases become more prevalent within our district.

COLOR-CODED RISK PHASES - SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Following the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s recommendations, Broken Arrow Public Schools will utilize the following “color-coded risk phases” based on information received from the Oklahoma State Department of Health each week. Phases are determined by the number of COVID-19 cases within our school boundaries as determined by local and state health departments. COVID-19 cases will be reviewed each Monday by the district’s leadership team, and color phases will be communicated to sites on a weekly basis each Monday afternoon.

At this time, Broken Arrow Public Schools will follow “Orange Phase” guidelines for the first nine weeks of school unless otherwise determined by local, state or district officials.

Risk Levels - Based on daily new cases per 100,000 over 7-day rolling average: 

  • Green - Less than 1.43 daily new cases per 100,000 population
  • Yellow - 1.43 to 14.39 daily new cases per 100,000 population
  • Orange - More than 14.39 daily new cases per 100,000 population
  • Red - More than 14.39 daily new cases per 100,000 plus one of: 
    • <5% statewide ICU bed availability
    • <5% statewide med-surg bed availability
    • <5% statewide ventilatory availability 
    • < 5 days statewide personal protective equipment availability

  • Red phase - will be practiced until the risk of spreading/contracting COVID19 is reduced significantly over an extended period of time
  • Orange phase - will be practiced until the risk of spreading/contracting COVID19 is reduced significantly over an extended period of time
  • Yellow phase - will be practiced until the risk of spreading/contracting COVID19 has remained stagnant or declined
  • Green phase - will be practiced indefinitely, or until a time when the risk of spreading/contracting COVID9 has increased and imposes a threat to the school/community

Red Phase

  • Districtwide distance learning for a minimum of 14 calendar days.

Orange Phase

  • Social (Physical/Spatial) distancing practiced as much as possible
  • Students upon arrival will be sent to their classrooms or a designated place with social distancing provided
  • Students will remain in classrooms or be gathered in designated classrooms in conjunction with bus routes or parent pickup 
  • No large group daily activities (assemblies) or field trips
  • Only approved visitors, i.e. IEP meetings
  • No classroom parties
  • No students will be walked to class or be able to have visitors at lunch
  • Large group evening activities should not exceed the capacity where social distancing cannot be practiced
  • Screen all guests for temperature and COVID19 symptoms if they need to meet with a teacher or administrator in person.  (SafeSchoolID will perform COVID screen questions and alert administrator of any yes responses- guest not allowed past the office, and provide other means for communication)
  • Masks are required for 3rd-12th grade students
  • Masks are highly recommended for Pre-K-2nd grade students
  • Masks are required for staff and visitors
  • Masks and other protective gear will be provided for staff members
  • Cafeteria practices social distancing in lines, seating will be distanced as much as possible and assigned seats will be required.  Good hygiene practices will be expected to include washing hands or sanitizing immediately prior to eating
  • High school will remain open campus for lunch
  • Schools should provide virtual opportunities for parent and community involvement ie. Parent Night
  • Playground handwashing
  • Students exhibiting signs will be sent to a symptom monitoring room and isolated until parents can pick up the child.  This designated area will be determined by the site principal.
  • Avoid large groups of students moving to various classrooms
  • B&A Connections’ parents check students in/out at a designated door (this will require additional staff members to stay within ratio).
  • B&A Connections will practice same hand washing/sanitizing protocols for snack and outdoor recreation as listed above.
  • B&A Connections will space centers out in the cafeteria and gymnasium for social distancing.

Orange Phase - Overall safety guidelines:

  • Masks are required for students in grades 3 through 12 and required for staff and visitors; masks are recommended for students in grades Pre-K through 2. Students are to provide and be responsible for their own masks.
  • Teachers will be provided masks and face shields, should they choose to wear both. Face shields cannot be used in lieu of a mask.
  • Teachers may wear spirit wear and jeans daily for ease of changing and cleaning of clothes.
  • Social distancing encouraged and practiced as much as possible.
  • If there is a confirmed positive case of COVID-19, the classroom will be closed for 48 hours of cleaning, any students within six feet that came into direct contact will quarantine and receive distance learning. Students who did not come into direct contact will attend class in an alternate location on site.
  • Site principals and counselors will complete the contact tracing course.
  • Students and staff should conduct the at-home wellness check daily before attending school.

School Opening and Dismissing Guidelines:

  • Schools should avoid large groups of students congregating.
  • Offer students the opportunity to go directly to classrooms, rather than waiting in common areas at the start of the school day.
  • Offer students the opportunity to wait in the classroom at dismissal and dismiss in phases to avoid large groups of students.

Classroom Guidelines:

  • Assigned seats required for each classroom
  • Students’ desks are separated as much as possible
  • Students stay in their seats for questions, rather than approaching the teacher’s desk- teacher goes to the student to maintain appropriate distance
  • Students have access to hand sanitizer and wipes
  • Common drinking fountains may be closed. Students are permitted to have a water bottle in class.
  • Each classroom has masks for students who may start coughing, showing symptoms
  • Students will use individual supplies, group supplies should be limited use only with disinfectant practices in place
  • Computer Labs wipe down devices after each hour or use.
  • Classroom door handles wiped before each hour, prop open the doors for students entering and exiting to avoid hands on door handles
  • Classroom items will be disinfected after use.
  • Teachers of younger will ensure students will wash or sanitize hands often and older students will be asked to do the same
  • Any snacks provided in the classroom must be individually packaged. No sharing of snacks is allowed.
  • Teachers may remove masks when teaching as long as they are maintaining a six-foot distance.
  • B&A Connections will follow classroom guidelines as much as possible. Each student will have individual supply boxes provided. Playdough and other sensory equipment will be provided in individual containers/bags.

Building guidelines:

  • Social distancing is practiced as much as possible in the hallway, office, common areas
  • Buildings have clear traffic patterns to eliminate cross traffic or congestion in hallways and corridors
  • Cafeteria tables are distanced as much as possible and students will have assigned seats
  • High school will remain an open campus during lunch
  • Cafeteria - Social distancing practiced
  • Enforce use of Student IDs for 9-12 to minimize student typing in student ID.
  • Avoid large groups of students as much as possible
  • Until further notice, elementary sites may use gymnasium with activities practicing social distancing, good hygiene for interactive games.
  • Media centers will be open for students to come in small groups and individual check outs.
  • Media, Art and Music classes will be sanitized between each rotation

 Yellow Phase

  • Social distancing practiced as much as possible
  • Large group activities-school-wide assemblies may be allowed with students and teacher only, large group activities must be limited so social distancing may be practiced
  • Classroom parties will be allowed, but guests are limited to homeroom parents and asked to wear masks. Any food items must be packaged.
  • Approved visitors will have temperature taken and a symptom check with nurse/health aid
  • Masks are required for 3rd-12th grade students
  • Masks are highly recommended for Pre-K-2nd grade students
  • Masks are required for staff and visitors
  • Cafeteria practices social distancing in lines, seating will be distanced as much as possible and assigned seats will be required.  Good hygiene practices will be expected to include washing hands or sanitizing immediately prior to eating
  • High school will remain open campus for lunch
  • Visitors are not permitted at lunch.
  • Playground handwashing before and after
  • Schools should provide virtual opportunities for parent and community involvement
  • Students exhibiting signs will be sent to a symptom monitoring room until parents can pick up the child.
  • B&A Connections would continue much like Phase 1 with arrival and dismissal procedures.

Green Phase

  • Schoolwide assemblies allowed
  • Visitors are allowed during lunch
  • Masks are optional and not required
  • Large group evening events allowed
  • Temperature screening may be an option, but not required
  • Regular cafeteria practices, to include all the good hygiene practices and handwashing
  • B&A Connections would allow parents to use their keypad codes to enter the building for arrival and dismissal procedures.

THE BASICS

  • First Day of School: Students enrolled at Broken Arrow Public Schools will return to in-person learning as scheduled on Aug. 19 for K-12 and Aug. 21 for Pre-K students unless further restrictions prevent us from doing so. The 2020-21 instructional calendar can be found on the front page of our website.
     
  • Learning Options: Students have three learning options from which to choose.
     
  • All At-School Learning: 100% in-person learning, five days a week, grades Pre-K through 12. (NOTE: When necessitated by COVID-19 conditions, at-school learning may move to distance learning facilitated by teachers through virtual platforms. View the district’s distance learning expectations for students, staff and administration.)
     
  • Full-time Virtual Academy: 100% online learning, students in grades Pre-K through 12 MUST enroll to participate in this program. Students are required to remain enrolled in the Virtual Academy for the entire semester. The deadline to enroll is Aug. 5.   • Blended Virtual Academy: Grades 6-12 can enroll in the Virtual Academy and still participate in an elective course at their school site, which may include fine arts or athletics. Transportation must be provided by a parent/guardian. The deadline to enroll is Aug. 5.
     
  • Special Education Services will communicate directly with students about learning accommodations. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact 918-259-7704.
     
  • New School End Times & Deletion of Late Start Wednesdays: The Broken Arrow Public Schools Board of Education recently approved the replacement of Late Start Wednesdays with six distance learning days and revised school times for the 2020-21 school year. The distance learning days embedded into the instructional calendar will occur on Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Feb. 1, March 1 and April 5. More info

The school times are as follows:

  • Early Childhood Centers – 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
  • Elementary – 9:10 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
  • Middle School – 8:30 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.
  • Freshman Academy & High School: 7:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.
     
  • Back to School Events:
     
  • Students: Events such as Back To School Night, Meet The Teacher and Schedule Pick-Up will be significantly altered due to the pandemic. Please continue to check your email for direct communication from your principal or visit www.baschools.org/backtoschool where updates will be frequently posted. Additionally, please make sure your contact information is up to date by completing your residency verification for the 2020-21 school year.
     
  • Staff: The district will conduct a virtual back-to-school kickoff for all employees. More information will be available soon.
     
  • Face Coverings
     
  • Students:
     
  • Students in grades Pre-K through 2: Masks are optional, however, are highly encouraged. 
  • Students in grades 3 through 12: Masks or gaiters ARE mandatory. Face shields are optional. Any exceptions require the approval of the site principal.*

*If students have medical documentation that prevents them from wearing a mask, please work with your school site’s health office or principal. If a student doesn’t have access to a mask, please work with your child’s school site principal, as he/she will have masks on hand.
 

  • Employees: ALL employees, including teachers, are required to wear a mask, unless they are outside, alone in a room or in school-owned vehicle. All employees will be provided with a mask and face shield should they choose to wear both. Face shields cannot be used in lieu of a mask.

If you have medical documentation that prevents you from wearing a mask, please submit to your supervisor. Supervisors will work with the human resources department on possible accommodations.

 

  • Transportation: Broken Arrow Public Schools plans to resume traditional transportation at the beginning of the new school year. All bus drivers will be required to wear face coverings. Students in grades 3-12 will be required to wear masks while on the bus. Students will load the bus starting at the back and filling to the front. Seating charts will be utilized for contact tracing. Where possible, students will be seated only one or two to a seat. High touch points will be frequently disinfected. All buses will be equipped with hand sanitizer. Weather permitting, roof vents and windows will be fully open to increase ventilation and air flow. A major shortage of drivers may result in adjustments to routes and schedules.   • Food and Nutrition: Child nutrition staff will wear masks at all times. Additional cleaning and disinfecting processes will be in place. Plans are in place for lunch times and tables to provide as much social distancing as possible. Plates and silverware will be disposable to prevent possible contamination. No guests will be allowed to have lunch on-site. Students in grades K-9 will have assigned seats in the cafeteria until further notice. Full-time Virtual Academy students may buy lunch at their home school site, if wanted. Normal lunch pricing and free/reduced status will remain the same. In the event of a full or partial temporary school closure, grab-and-go meals will be available outside of each school site from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. during regular school days.
     
  • Access to School Buildings for Parents & Visitors: Parents must remain in their cars and drive through the drop-off line. Staff members will be stationed outside of the school building to help direct students to their classrooms. Parents who wish to check their student out of school must only enter the main entrance of their child’s building and must wait in the secure entrance area. Parents and visitors will be prohibited from entering hallways, classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums and other common areas unless otherwise approved by the school. This includes the first day of school. Those who are approved by the principal will be asked to wear a mask.
     
  • All Early Childhood Centers have plans in place for allowing parents/guardians to see their child’s school and classroom prior to the first day of school. Here are the ways in which our Pre-K programs will help our youngest learners get a safe and positive start to school:
     
  • Every child will attend a scheduled screening at their school site. During the screening appointment, the parent and child will be able to see the common areas of the school and receive a labeled map of the school. The family can use the map to discuss the school building at home.
             
  • Once students are assigned a teacher, their teacher will reach out to the family and tell them where they can locate their classroom on the map.
     
  • Families may visit the school for a second time during Meet Your Teacher, where the child and a parent can walk to the child’s classroom, meet the teacher and the teacher’s assistant, drop off school supplies and see the classroom. Parents are asked to bring their child’s backpack so an important bag tag can be fastened to their backpack to assist with getting the student to/from class. Each child will also receive a special bracelet to assist with the first day of school. The bag tag and bracelet will allow staff to easily identify classroom pod color/hallway, classroom teacher, and mode of transportation (car #, daycare, etc.). Parents should communicate with the child’s teacher if they cannot attend so a plan can be made to get these important items.
     
  • On the first day of school, teachers, teacher’s assistants, screened volunteers and other staff will personally deliver children to their classroom. There will be designated adults to help them out of the vehicle, escort small groups of children into the building and welcome them to the classroom with a smile! Each site will communicate their specific plan, including traffic flow maps, prior to the first day of class. The plan will include how students will be picked-up from school at the end of the school day.
     
  • Families with a child enrolled in B&A Connections at the ECC will receive instructions on how to drop off/pick up their child from the B&A Connections office. During Meet Your Teacher, families can see the B&A Connections space and receive other B&A information or ask questions. If a child attends B&A Connections in the morning, the B&A staff will escort the students to their classroom. They will utilize the bag tags and bracelet system to know where the child needs to go. If a child attends B&A Connections after school, adults from both the site and B&A Connections will work together to get the children to B&A.
     
  • For families whose child attends a Solo Pre-K site (Rhoades, Lynn Wood or Liberty):
     
  • Each child will have their screening and meet their teacher at the same time.
  • The teacher or teacher’s assistant will provide the parent with the class’ written plan for drop off and pick up at the screening appointment.
  • They will guide the parent through the procedure for dropping off and picking up the child at that time.
  • They will also provide parents with a traffic flow map,  bag tags and car rider numbers at the child’s scheduled screening.
  • Parents should bring their child’s supplies and backpack to the screening appointment so the teacher or assistant can attach the bag tag for the first day.
  • On the first day, teachers, teacher’s assistants, screened volunteers and other staff will escort the students to their classroom.
  • There will also be adults available to help with dismissal at the end of the day.
     
  • First day of school for Kindergarten students and students new to elementary school sites: Principals will work on schedules providing small blocks of time for parents of kindergarten students and of students who are new to elementary sites to bring their child to class on the first day of school. Parents will not be required to do so, but this will be an option for the first day of school. Principals and teachers will provide detailed plans on how they will supervise kindergarten students and get them to and from classrooms safely so parents feel comfortable.
     
  • Athletics, Fine Arts and Student Activities: All school-sponsored activities and athletic teams will continue to adhere to guidelines put in place by the district and recommendations from state and local health agencies. Please reach out to your child’s coach or club sponsor with any questions or concerns. More information can be found below regarding athletics, fine arts and students activities.
     
  • Distance Learning: If a virus outbreak requires the closure of the district, individual schools or affects specific groups of students, we will be ready to serve students through distance learning where students will continue to learn new content through virtual platforms, such as Zoom, Canvas, YouTube, etc.
     
  • B&A Connections: B&A Connections will check their students in/out at a designated door. Families will be receiving specific information from the B&A Connections’ office with further instructions.
     
  • Code of Conduct: Students enrolling for in-person learning are expected to adhere to all public health guidelines, protocols and procedures. Attendance at school will serve as agreement to these terms.
     
  • Classroom and/or school site closings will be assessed by the number of cases within that school site.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Self-Monitoring for Students and Staff
     
  • Staff members will be expected to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms prior to reporting to work each day.
     
  • Parents/guardians are expected to screen their children for COVID-19 symptoms each day prior to sending their students to school. Each morning, families are asked to take their children's temperatures, as a fever of 100 degrees or greater may be an indication of an active case of COVID-19. If this is the case, please keep your child home to monitor for additional symptoms. If a student begins displaying COVID-19 symptoms at school, he/she should report to the nurse’s office immediately. Parents will be contacted to pick up their child as soon as possible.
     
  • People with COVID-19 have reported a variety of symptoms - ranging from mild to severe. Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Families should monitor children and should not send children to school if they have one or more of the following symptoms:
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Sore throat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Diarrhea
     
  • In an effort to prevent possible exposure of staff and students to COVID-19, parents/guardians are asked to review the following questions each morning and PRIOR to your child riding a school bus or entering school.
     
  • Social distancing will be practiced to the fullest level possible.
     
  • School sites will implement social distancing in common areas (hallways, gyms, cafeterias, etc.) when feasible.
  • Students will remain in classrooms or will be given a designated classroom in conjunction with bus routes or parent pickup.
  • Assigned seats will be required for each classroom and the cafeteria. (Broken Arrow High School students will continue to have an open campus for lunch.)
  • There will be no field trips, classroom parties, assemblies or large group activities until further notice. Evening activities will be limited to one grade level at a time.
  • Each elementary site will develop a recess schedule that allows daily outdoor playtime for all students. Recess schedules may vary at sites due to limiting the number of students in any one area. Equipment will be disinfected before and after use.
     
  • Handwashing and Sanitization: Washing and/or sanitizing hands frequently is one of the best ways to protect against infection. Students will be frequently reminded to wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before and after eating, using the restroom or utilizing playground equipment. Students and staff members will also have access to alcohol-based hand sanitizer in classrooms and other common areas.
     
  • Water fountains may be disconnected. However, students and staff are encouraged to bring non-breakable water containers to school to utilize the school sites water bottle filling stations.
     
  • School Supplies: Students will not be allowed to share supplies, such as pens, pencils, markers, scissors, crayons, etc. Any supplies or tools needed to be used by multiple students will be sanitized between uses. The elementary school supply list can be found here via www.baschools.org/backtoschool. Middle and high school supply lists will be provided to students by their teachers on the first day of school. We encourage parents/guardians to wait until after the first day of school before buying supplies, as each teacher has a specific list of supplies that students will need for their particular classes.
     
  • Cleaning protocols: During the school day, staff will clean commonly touched surfaces inside classrooms and on school buses, while maintenance personnel will clean commonly touched surfaces in common areas. A CDC approved disinfectant agent is also sprayed through rooms and coats commonly touched surfaces after cleaning. Secondary student desks will be cleaned following each class period. Restrooms will be cleaned multiple times throughout the day by custodial staff. If there is a confirmed positive case of COVID-19, the room in which there was exposure will be closed for 48 hours for cleaning. For more information about the important safety protocols in place to prevent infectious diseases in schools, visit the operations section of our website.  

ATHLETICS, FINE ARTS & STUDENT ACTIVITIES

All students participating in athletics, fine arts or student activities will be required to answer the following questions of a COVID-19 Daily Survey prior to each activity. Any that answer “YES” to any question or recording at temperature of 100.4 degrees or above must be sent home.

  • Do you have a fever?
  • Do you have a sore throat?
  • Do you have a cough?
  • Do you have a loss of smell or taste?
  • Do you have shortness of breath?
  • Have you had close contact to a positive COVID patient
  • Record temperature - must be below 100.4 degrees

COVID-19 Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Body Aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sore Throat
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of Smell and/or Taste
  • Runny nose

ATHLETICS

The athletic guidelines outlined in this document are meant to decrease the potential exposure and spread of COVID-19 and to increase the likelihood of our student-athletes enjoying an athletic experience this school year. This is not an exhaustive list of all accommodations we will be taking to ensure a safe and successful athletic year, and it is a living document that will be adjusted based on our working with federal, state and local health officials. Even when taking all precautions, there is still risk of transmitting and being exposed to illness. We continue to encourage vigilant hand washing and sanitizing, the wearing of masks, the disinfecting protocols of our district and social distancing when possible.

Event Workers and Facility Accommodations

  • Ticket takers, sellers and athletic personnel will wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Ticket booths, plexi-glass barriers and/or plexi-glass face shields will be utilized at each event.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be made available throughout the facility.
  • 6’ social distancing markers will be placed on the walkways in high traffic areas.
  • Every other row in all athletic bleachers will be closed to spectator seating and communicated through stickers on the closed rows.
  • All events will be half-capacity attendance.
  • All patrons are strongly encouraged to wear a mask when attending a Broken Arrow athletic event.
  • Public address announcements will be made frequently thanking patrons for their partnership in washing their hands, utilizing the hand sanitizer stations, practicing social distancing and by wearing a mask when able.
  • Visiting locker rooms will be made available for visiting coaches and student-athletes. We will require a mask by all coaches and student-athletes until they enter their playing area (court, field, mat, track, etc.)
  • All facilities will be thoroughly cleaned prior to and immediately after all home athletic events.

Practice and Workout Accommodations

  • All coaches and student-athletes must wear masks to enter any Broken Arrow Athletics facilities.
  • All coaches and student-athletes must check-in each day before entering any Broken Arrow Athletics facilities.
  • Temperatures of all coaches and student-athletes will be taken prior to any activity and will be logged daily. Anyone with a temperature 100.4 degrees or above will be sent home and prohibited from entrance.
  • All coaches and student-athletes will complete a COVID-19 survey each day prior to any activity. Any ‘YES’ answers on the survey will prohibit that coach or student-athlete from entering the facility, and he/she will be sent home
  • All coaches and student-athletes must wear masks during workouts; except when performing activities restrictive to breathing and whenever proper social distancing is possible
  • No more than three student-athletes will be permitted on each piece of work out equipment
  • All coaches and student-athletes must keep a distance of at least 6 feet from other groups
  • All coaches and student-athletes must sanitize their hands prior to entering any Broken Arrow Athletics facility
  • No shared hydrating bottles, towels, gloves or any other personal equipment is permitted. All coaches and student-athletes are required to bring their own hydration bottle. Campus water fountains will be unavailable for use. The touchless water bottle fillers, where available, may be used
  • No shared helmets or equipment worn on the head, including facemasks.
  • The training room in the Varsity Training Center will be open by appointment only with a trainer present and limited to four student-athletes at a time, maintaining distancing limitations and wearing masks.

Contest Accommodations

  • Field/court access will be limited to essential personnel
  • All coaches and student-athletes will wear a mask until they enter their playing area (court, field, mat, track, etc.)
  • All NFHS and OSSAA rules will be reviewed to determine sideline, substitution, uniform, equipment, etc. modifications that can be implemented as safety measures and communicated with head coaches
  • All post-contest handshake lines will be postponed until further notice. We will demonstrate the important lesson of sportsmanship and honoring our opponents by the manner in which we compete

Transportation and Travel

  • All coaches and student-athletes will have their temperatures taken and survey conducted prior to all trips
  • All coaches and student-athletes will sanitize their hands upon entering and exiting all buses
  • All coaches and student-athletes will be required to wear a mask while on the bus
  • Coaches must keep a log of all coaches and student-athletes on each bus and assign seats
  • Pregame and postgame meals and snacks must be individually boxed for each coach and student-athlete
  • No shared hydrating bottles, towels, gloves, or any other personal equipment is permitted. All coaches and student-athletes are required to bring their own hydration bottle. On campus, touchless water bottle fillers will be available for use.
  • Electrostatic disinfecting misters will be utilized for all equipment utilized by the team during pregame warmups
  • If staying overnight, no more than 2 student-athletes or coaches are permitted to one room

 

FINE ARTS

The Broken Arrow Fine Arts department proposes the following procedures for the 2020-2021 school year. The guidelines outlined in this document are meant to decrease the potential exposure and spread of COVID-19, and to increase the likelihood of our students enjoying an arts experience this school year.

This is not an exhaustive list of all accommodations we will be taking to ensure a safe and successful school year.  It is a living document that will be adjusted based on our working with federal, state, and local health officials. Even when taking all precautions, there is still risk of transmitting and being exposed to illness. We continue to encourage vigilant hand washing and sanitizing, the wearing of masks, the disinfecting protocols of our district, and social distancing when possible.

Protocols:

  • All teachers and students must wear masks to enter the facility or building (and remain on until activities begin)
  • All students in Pride and Show Choir must check in each day before entering the facilities and complete a COVID-19 survey. Any ‘YES’ answers on the survey will prohibit entry and sent home for further evaluation. (See sample 'COVID-19 Daily Survey’ above.)
  • Students are to arrive “dressed out” and are to leave the campus immediately following their activity
  • Temperatures of all teachers and students will be taken prior to any activity and logged daily. Temperatures of 100.4 degrees or above will prohibit entry and sent home for further evaluation.
  • All teachers and students are to maintain a distance of 6 feet apart from others where possible.
  • All students must sanitize / hand wash prior to entering the facility.
  • Students must provide their own water bottle (jug) and sharing with others is not permitted.
  • All secondary Choir, Drama, Visual Art, Debate/Speech and Orchestra students will wear a mask at all times.

Other Classes and Programs:

  • Elementary Music and Art students grades 3 – 5 will be required to wear a mask at all times.
  • When possible, principals should schedule five minutes between groups, so the teacher has time to sanitize the area.
  • Singing for elementary music should be limited to outside or a space where social distancing can be achieved.
  • Supplies should not be shared among students. If a supply or item is shared it should be sanitized between groups.
  • All other regular classroom COVID protocols should be followed.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ACTIVITIES

  • The goal will be to provide a safe environment while still providing activities and experiences that support our engagement goals.
  • No traditional school dances will be held.
  • No assemblies or pep assemblies.
  • No mentoring at different sites.
  • All events will be open air that allow for social distancing. Masks may be required.
  • Temperature checks and surveys will be taken for all events.
  • Attendance may be capped to allow for social distancing. Seniors will be given first priority. 

EXPOSURE & RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER COVID-19

Students exhibiting signs of COVID-19 or who have a fever of 100 degrees or higher will be asked to wear a face covering and sent to a symptom monitoring room and isolated until parents can pick up the child and seek a medical opinion.

Parents will be notified by school staff in conjunction with the Tulsa Health Department if a student has been in close contact with someone who tests positive with COVID-19. Students who come into close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual must self-quarantine with distance learning assignments for 14 days or receive a negative COVID test. Students who test negative may still be required to wear a mask for 14 days. Those students who did not come into direct contact will attend class in an alternate location on site for up to 48 hours.

What does “close contact” mean?

  • You spent at least 15 minutes or more at a distance of six feet or closer.
  • You had direct physical contact (high five, hugging) with the person.
  • You shared eating or drinking utensils with them.
  • You came into contact with their respiratory droplets (e.g., they coughed or sneezed on you).

Any student who tests positive OR has symptoms may return to school after:

  • No fever for three days AND
  • Respiratory symptoms have improved AND
  • 10 days have passed since the first symptoms appeared

Any student who tested positive for COVID-19 but had no symptoms can return to school after:

  • 10 days have passed since the test OR
  • One negative COVID-19 test provided to their school site's health office. Students will be asked to wear a mask (if possible) for the remainder of the 14 days.

Any student notified to quarantine because of immediate contact can return to school after:

  • No fever or respiratory symptoms for 14 days from the time he/she was exposed OR
  • One negative COVID-19 test after five to seven days from initial contact

The district is currently in negotiations with healthcare providers to assist both students and employees with rapid COVID-19 test results. More information will be available soon.


ATTENDANCE AFTER POSITIVE COVID-19 OR DURING SELF-QUARANTINE

  • Students: Students who test positive for COVID-19 or who self-quarantine due to being in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 will utilize distance learning for 14 days. If a student completes his/her daily assignments, he/she will be counted present for that day.
     
  • Staff: If you receive a positive COVID-19 test, please contact human resources at 918-259-5745 or HRDesk@baschools.org. You can return to work after receiving a negative test at least ten days after the initial positive test. COVID-19 related leave (paid and unpaid) or other leave is available to help should you receive a positive test. Human resources will discuss options with individuals who test positive.

Employees who have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 have the option to: (a) use applicable leave to remain at home for 14 days from the date of exposure, or (b) provided they are asymptomatic, an employee must provide a negative test, self-monitor while wearing a mask at all times in the workplace and socially distance (to the extent practical) for 14 days from the date of exposure.


School Reentry FAQs

What is Broken Arrow Public School’s plans for starting school this year?

Broken Arrow Public Schools plan on opening as scheduled on Aug. 19. CDC article explaining the importance of reopening schools in the fall.

What options are available for students?

Traditional, blended learning for 6th-12th and Full Time Virtual for Pre-K through 12.

Why isn’t BAPS postponing the start of the school year?

The districtwide survey showed the majority of patrons wanted school to open as originally scheduled.

Why isn’t BAPS using a modified schedule (such as two days on, two days at home)?

At this time, this option was not selected by our patrons. It could be reviewed again at a later date.

Are masks required for staff?

Yes, masks are required for all staff unless they are in an enclosed space by themselves.

Are masks required for students?

Masks will be required for all 3rd-12th grade students. Grades Pre-K through 2nd grade will not be required to wear masks, but it is recommended.

How will my student’s school accommodate for social distancing?

Classrooms will be arranged to accommodate social distancing as much as possible. Assigned seats will be required in all classrooms and in cafeterias, and students will not be allowed to congregate in large groups, such as assemblies.

Why do students in Kindergarten through 9th grade have assigned seats at lunch?

This will limit the amount of people students interact with over 15 minutes daily prolonged exposure.

Why can’t visitors and volunteers come to school?

Visitors and volunteers are still welcome; however, must be approved through the building principal. We always appreciate guests in our schools, but at this time we are monitoring number of visitors in order to maintain a safe environment.

What will happen if there is a suspected case of COVID-19 in my students’ classroom?

Teachers, health staff and office staff will all be trained on identifying students with symptoms, following procedures of sending students to the health office and notifying parents. Contact tracing will be followed and any students possibly exposed will be identified and parents will be contacted. Parents will only be notified if their child was exposed.

What is the difference between distance learning and the Virtual Academy?

Distance learning is temporary and will be determined by the building principal and health staff. During distance learning, students will use Canvas (our online learning platform), Zoom meetings and other modes of learning provided by their regular classroom teacher. When these students aren’t in distance learning, they are in their school building with their teacher and peers.

Virtual Academy is a commitment for the school year. Parents must enroll their student in the full-time Virtual Academy and will be provided information on the online curriculum. Students in the Virtual Academy may come to Broken Arrow Virtual Academy for support as scheduled, but otherwise independently work at their own pace.

How will distance learning be different than this past spring semester?

Students will be taught new standards, daily attendance and participation are required, assessments will be given and grades will be taken.

What is the deadline for enrolling the Virtual Academy?

The deadline for Virtual Academy enrollment is Aug. 5 for first semester.

How will distance learning be determined?

Distance learning will be determined upon positive cases of COVID-19 per classroom per school. Each building principal and health office staff will monitor all reports of COVID-19 and work with their supervisor in determining the need to transition to distance learning.

How will we know if the classroom or school is moving to distance learning?

The building principal will notify parents if any students, classroom or school building transitions to distance learning. Please make sure all contact information is up-to-date so you can stay informed.

Will the entire classroom always be on distance learning at the same time?

Entire classrooms will not necessarily be on distance learning at the same time. It will be determined by the building principal, health staff and district administration.
