Upcoming Growth and Development presentations scheduled Jan. 10-12

Developmentally appropriate human growth and development education is provided in several courses throughout the Broken Arrow Public Schools health curriculum. Each year, a presentation is given by the school nurse to students regarding Growth and Development.

The goals of the BAPS human growth and development presentations are:

  • To develop a comfortable and trusting classroom atmosphere so that discussions and learning about development can take place
  • To provide accurate information about the physical changes of puberty and to help students develop positive attitudes about their changing bodies
  • To encourage and enhance communication between parents and their children

The course content at the middle levels include:

  • 6th Grade: Sixth grade growth and development classes contain information about changes that occur during adolescence and include a film and a question and answer session provided by the school nurse. Sixth graders will also receive AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) prevention education in accordance with Oklahoma law. Sixth grade girls and boys are separated for these classes. This presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10.  (Girls Presentation) (Boys Presentation)

  • 7th Grade:  Seventh grade classes contain in-depth information regarding puberty for each gender. The focus is on abstinence and dealing with peer pressure regarding high risk behaviors. The instruction is provided by the school nurse. Seventh grade girls and boys are separated for this presentation. This presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 11. (Presentation)

  • 8th Grade:  Eighth grade classes contain information regarding the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, with the focus on abstinence. Broken Arrow Public Schools strongly believes that the teaching of human growth and development is primarily the responsibility of parents. The BAPS program is designed to assist parents with that responsibility by presenting a developmentally appropriate, straightforward, fact-based program of instruction. Growth and development curriculum is available for inspection by parents. For additional information, please contact Emily Scott, school nurse, at escott@baschools.org or 918-259-4350 x2174.

Parents may opt-out of participation for their children in any classes or events by notifying the school health office in writing prior to the classes being taught.
