It is with great honor and a grateful heart that I have been recently selected as the new Superintendent for Broken Arrow Public Schools.
Broken Arrow is my home. My mom and dad graduated from here in 1950, my brother in 1970 and my sister in 1975. I attended Oak Crest Elementary, Sequoyah Middle School and South Intermediate High School. As a 1987 Broken Arrow graduate along with my wife Monaca, we were the first class to attend the new high school for both our junior and senior years. Other than when I was obtaining my undergraduate degree from the University of Tulsa, I have lived my entire life in this wonderful city. I earned my Master of Education degree from Northeastern State University at the BA campus, which has brought me to where I am today. It is humbling to be in the same role of someone who I grew up admiring, former Superintendent Dr. Clarence G. Oliver, Jr.
In my last eight years of service to this amazing district, I have seen so many academic, athletic, fine arts and engagement-minded initiatives envelop our students, staff and teachers in a way I could have never imagined when I began my educational career in 1992 as a teacher at Haskell Middle School and head boys soccer coach at the high school. Engaging students, both in and out of the classroom, has always been a passion of mine. Helping bring the JROTC program to Broken Arrow High School in 2015 is one my proudest moments. The growth of our leadership program across secondary sites has given me great joy. The intentional focus that the district has directed at the high school has seen Leadership classes grow from two sections eight years ago to ten today, which has made it one of the most popular electives on campus. It is not unusual to have more than 1,000 students at an event because they feel connected to their school. Along with our amazing educators who pour in the lives of our students every day, I feel that these type of engagement opportunities help build school culture to an even greater level.
I will continue to uphold our four core values of responsibility, learning, relationship-building and diversity every day, noting that literacy, engagement and graduation are the end goals for all of our students. There’s a reason that families seek out and move to our community of more than 100,000 citizens and nearly 20,000 students—we are the best at what we do, setting the standard for how an educational organization can and should be operated. Our unwavering commitment to making BA a top academic destination in the state will not stop as we continue to be innovative with the likes of Vanguard and Early College High School. I vow to empower all students from our early childhood students to seniors crossing the stage so that they have the tools to be the leaders of our community long after we are gone. Students will always remain our priority, as well as providing as much support to classrooms as possible.
With that, I realize it takes all of us to continue making Broken Arrow the wonderful place it is and continue to strive for success in all areas of our disciplines. I can assure our incredible staff and parents that I will always listen to their suggestions and concerns. We have a great school board that has shown time and time again how much they love serving this district. This journey will not be about me, but it will be about a team continuing to meet the needs of our students in an ever-changing world. Thank you for entrusting me in this position and know it is something I do not take lightly. As a lifelong Broken Arrow citizen and graduate, I am a product of this district and am proud to serve you as we move into the next chapter.
