Home Language Survey Information

In the state of Oklahoma, the Home Language Survey is a required document for all students enrolled in public schools.  The information provided in the document is used for three purposes:

1.  To identify students who have a language other than English spoken in the home who may qualify for English Language Learner classes.

2.  To identify students who have a language other than English spoken in the home who may qualify as Bilingual on the District Accreditation Report.  This information is also used as part of the state funding formula with generates additional money for the district's general fund budget which is used to pay salaries, materials, operational costs, etc.

3.  To identify students who may qualify as Immigrant students and qualify for cultural and community services in the area.

In Broken Arrow Public Schools, all students complete a Home Language Survey upon initial enrollment.  Home Language Surveys that indicate that a language other than English is spoken in the home are required to be updated annually per the Oklahoma State Department of Education as part of the Annual District Accreditation Report.

If the information provided in the survey indicates that a language other than English is spoken in the home, the student's English language proficiency will be assessed.  Parents will be notified of the assessment results and any recommended services.

If you have any questions about this information or procedures, please contact the Title III Office at 918-259-5745.
