Overview

Celia Armstrong, Director of Human Resources

If you are interested in becoming a teacher in the Broken Arrow Public Schools, working as a substitute teacher is a great way to sharpen your teaching skills while getting to know our schools as well as the principals and teachers in our school district. Substitute teaching can lead to professional teaching positions, if you hold a valid Oklahoma teaching license.

Substitute Training
Substitutes for Broken Arrow Public Schools will receive training in a Substitute Workshop. Workshops are scheduled on an as needed basis as necessary to retain sufficient substitutes to cover classes.

Substitute training will include, but not be limited to, information on timekeeping, classroom discipline, performance responsibilities, IRC Section 3121 plan participation, use of AESOP, substitute code of ethics, pay dates, site locations, etc.

Substitutes are required to successfully complete an OSBI background check prior to being assigned to a classroom.

Substitutes desiring to substitute for BAPS will pay $45 to offset the cost of the background check and fingerprinting. A copy of the completed background check is available to the substitute upon request.

Complaints Re Substitutes
Complaints from sites regarding performance, inappropriate behavior, failure to comply with district policy and procedure, etc., of a substitute will be emailed to the Substitute Coordinator.

The Substitute Coordinator will notify the substitute of the complaint. Should the nature of the complaint be such that the safety of students or staff is in question, the Substitute Coordinator will gather relevant information and forward to the HRD immediately for resolution.

The decision to remove a substitute from AESOP will be made by the HRD. A substitute will typically be removed from AESOP once the substitute office has received three (3) complaints from three (3) different sites. Serious complaints leading to concerns for students and staff may justify immediate removal of the substitute from active status. In either case, a letter will be sent to any substitute removed from AESOP notifying them of the circumstances of the removal.

Staffing
The approved mechanism for assignment of district substitutes is AESOP. Certified staff under contract to BAPS are required to report all absences via AESOP, whether or not their absence requires a substitute. Teachers shall report/call-in no later than 6:30 a.m. for secondary and 7:30 a.m. for elementary the day of absence.

Certified substitutes are given priority in assignment to open positions.
