Because of its efforts in providing students with opportunities that prepare them for the workforce, Broken Arrow Public Schools (BAPS) was recently awarded the 2017-18 State Superintendent Award for Excellence in Career and Technology Education from the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
“Broken Arrow Public Schools has created a K-12 pathway where students collaborate and use critical thinking skills and technology to engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) projects,” said BAPS Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Dr. Margaret Coates. “We offer our students a number of opportunities to experience career and technology education through a variety of programs.”
Among those programs is Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a K-12 project and problem based contextual learning curriculum that prepares students for success in engineering and technology programs. This program is funded by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, Paragon Films, Zeeco and CareerTech.
PLTW’s Launch modules and various STEM activities provide hands-on instruction to elementary students, allowing them to explore in a safe environment. Gateway to Technology (GTT) is a separate course offering from PLTW, which is offered to middle schools as an introduction to the later high school courses. The high school courses include engineering, manufacturing, family and consume science, Future Farmers of America, business and information technology and many others.
In addition, BAPS students are able to attend Tulsa Technology Center and participate in more than 12 different pathways, allowing them to finish high school with an industry certification.
“Oklahoma is doing something completely unheard of,” said Charles Young, a Tulsa Technology Center employee who teaches at Broken Arrow High School (BAHS). “We are becoming pioneers of career and technical education, and we continue to take things to the next level. BAHS and Tulsa Tech are coming together to provide students with an opportunity to help them find a high paying, rewarding and highly-skilled career – not a job, but a career.”
Coates agrees with Young’s sentiments.
“It is vitally important that we continue to grow these programs and partnerships, so that we can sustain a qualified workforce to enhance and grow the economy for Broken Arrow,” Coates said.
Tickets to the season-opening Broken Arrow-Union football game will be available for purchase in the Broken Arrow Athletic Office, Aug. 22-24, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
Reserved Season tickets are still available and may also be purchased during these times. Reserved season tickets are $50.

The SAT is the nation's most widely used admissions test among colleges and universities, so Broken Arrow Public Schools (BAPS) recently partnered with the College Board to administer the exam to all juniors at no cost on April 10. The SAT is accepted at all Oklahoma colleges and universities.
In addition, all sophomores will take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on Oct. 11, which pinpoints areas for development. Juniors will also have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT again to earn national merit recognition.
“Research shows that the SAT assesses the critical thinking skills that our students need for academic success in college and beyond,” BAPS Superintendent Dr. Janet Dunlop said. “Our instructional team decided to transition from offering the free ACT to the SAT because the SAT was recently redesigned to reflect state and district standards. This will allow our students to showcase their best work by mastering the skills they are learning in the classroom.”
In 2016, the College Board made significant changes to the SAT, including content, format and scoring.
“There is no penalty for guessing, no more SAT vocabulary words, more time per question, and more relevant math and reading questions,” BAPS Executive Director of Assessment Jean Brassfield said. “The redesigned test prioritizes content that students will encounter in college and in their future work lives. It will reinforce what students are learning in the classroom and will focus on the content tested, not just test-taking strategies.”
In addition, the College Board provides students with SAT practice tools through the Khan Academy, which includes personalized study plans, full-length practice tests, thousands of interactive practice questions, video lessons, test taking tips and more.
“New data links Khan Academy practice tools to substantial student score gains from the PSAT to the SAT,” Brassfield said. “Nationally, students who used Khan Academy to prepare for the SAT for 20 hours experienced an average score gain of 115 points on a 1,600 point scale. That’s nearly double the average score gain achieved by students who didn’t use Khan Academy.”
Juniors are required to take the SAT on April 10 and will not need to register. Students will receive additional details closer to the test date.
“Administering the SAT during the school day helps foster a college-going culture and increases access to college,” said Brassfield. “’SAT School Day’ is beneficial for students who may otherwise face barriers to standard Saturday administrations.”

As a participant in the National School Lunch Program, BAPS offers free and reduced rates on breakfast and lunch for students of families that meet certain income guidelines.
All students who wish to participate in the Free/Reduced program must enroll for the 2017-2018 school year by filling out an application.
The income eligibility guidelines and online application for Free/Reduced Meals will be available at the beginning of August at www.baschools.org/childnutrition. The application will also be available at each school site, the enrollment office or the child nutrition department.
Applications for the 2017-2018 school year will be due by October 2017. On this date, the students that were on free and reduced lunches for the 2016-2017 school year will be cut from the program if a new application has not be processed.
Application processing time can be up to 10 days, although the child nutrition department works diligently to minimize the wait time for benefit assignment.

Broken Arrow Public Schools will offer two passes for students during the 2017-2018 school year.
The Student Athletic Pass and the All-Access Pass can be purchased at Passport to Success/Schedule Pickup or from the Student Activities Department. The Student Activities Department is located in the Student Union on the Broken Arrow High School campus at 1901 East Albany Street.
Passes will be sold Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. beginning August 7 and at Passport to Success/Schedule Pickup.
NOTE: The Activities Department will replace lost, stolen or destroyed Student Athletic Passes or Reserved Tickets at a discounted rate with proof of purchase. There are no refunds.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act allows a district to designate certain student data as directory information. Broken Arrow Public Schools has designated “directory information” to include a student’s name, parents’ names, address and telephone listing, date and place of birth, class designation (i.e., first grade, tenth grade, etc.), extracurricular participation, achievement awards or honors, dates of attendance, weight and height, photograph, as well as the school or school district the student attended before he/she enrolled in Broken Arrow schools. BAPS will continue to disclose student directory information for the purposes of printing student names in yearbooks, honor rolls, athletic programs and publications.
Parents or eligible students should advise the principal of the school(s) of attendance in writing of any or all of the items they refuse to permit the district to designate as directory information about that student. The designation will remain in effect until it is modified by the written direction of the student’s parent or the eligible student.
This notice is to inform parents that Broken Arrow Public Schools is maintaining an ongoing Child Find search to locate, identify and evaluate any child age 3-21 with an established or suspected disability. Child Find efforts include all individuals age 3-21 not enrolled in school, as well as those who attend public and private schools, Head Start, state institutions, and other child care or treatment facilities. Children not of school age must reside in the boundaries of Broken Arrow Public Schools to be included in the Child Find efforts.
Broken Arrow Public Schools has established and maintains a comprehensive screening and multidisciplinary referral, evaluation, and eligibility process for the identification of children with suspected disabilities. The District’s general education interventions will not delay the initial evaluation for special education services of a student suspected of having a disability. Child Find activities contain a mandate for public awareness of contact, location and established screening procedures. At the beginning of each school year, a local school district that accepts Title I, Part A funding must notify parents of students in Title I schools that they can request information regarding their child’s teacher, including, at a minimum:
(1) whether the teacher has met the state requirements for licensure and certification for the grade levels and subject-matters in which the teacher provides instruction; and
(2) whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or their provisional status through which state qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; and
(3) the college major and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree; and
(4) whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals, and if so, their qualifications.
In addition, each Title I school must provide each parent timely notice that the parent's child has been assigned, or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified.

BAPS uses the latest technology to enhance student learning, student engagement and student achievement. The 1:1 computer initiative provides every student in grades 9-12 with a personal device to explore and utilize educational resources both inside and outside the classroom – from accessing class content and textbooks online, to communicating and collaborating with classmates and teachers. With 1:1, students have the best teacher-facilitated instruction combined with the best technology at their fingertips.
Students will not receive their schedule at schedule pick up until Chromebook insurance is purchased. If families decide to opt out of purchasing insurance, there will be an opportunity for parents to sign an opt out form to take responsibility of damage/lost/stolen devices. Broken Arrow Public Schools’ “Parent Nights” are a valuable opportunity for early childhood and elementary parents to learn important information about their child's classroom experience.
“Parent engagement is important to everything we do here at Broken Arrow,” said Jennifer Peterson, BAPS executive director of elementary instruction. “Research shows that if parents are engaged in their child’s education, student achievement is sure to follow. We truly hope our parents take the time to go back to school for a night and learn all about what their child’s site has to offer.”
During “Parent Night,” teachers will share their daily and weekly schedule, their teaching style and methodology, how they grade and their classroom requirements.
Many teachers ask parents to sit in their child’s seat, which gives parents the opportunity to see the classroom from their child’s point of view. It also gives teachers the chance to mentally match parents with students. There will also be many opportunities to sign up for volunteer activities, either for schoolwide programs or in the classroom.
In addition, each elementary site often has a PTA meeting that evening in conjunction with Parent Night, so that parents can easily get involved. However, depending on the school site that meeting may take place before or after the teacher’s presentation.
