Country Lane Primary held its first Read-a-Thon
One of Country Lane Primary's goals this year was to foster a love of reading in its students. With this goal in mind, Country Lane's PTA sponsored its first ever Read-a-Thon to encourage kids to read. Students were challenged to read as many books as they could from January 29 to February 4th. During their "reading week," the principal called students during the evening to try and catch them reading. Students from Country Lane Intermediate also visited to read to the students during their weekly library visit. The school also reminded students and parents of their goal through the morning announcements, Facebook and the weekly school newsletter.
The students were also motivated by a promise by their principal, Mrs. Milligan. If the school met their goal, she would spend the night on the roof of the school. A thermometer in the school cafeteria tracked progress toward our goal, with a picture of Mrs.Milligan in her pajamas at the top.
Country Lane Primary students rose to the challenge, reading over 5,485 books in only 7 days and raising over $7,700 for PTA! The top 5 readers in each grade received a certificate for a free book from the spring book fair. They are:
| Pre-K Cesar A. Rodriguez Nariah Myers Caleb Walker Jax Mylan Ryley Dent |
Kindergarten Braeden Roberts Ava Boswell Luke Ferguson Alyssa Brown Brock Ward |
First Ella Manhart Carson Spencer Libby Walker Georgia Bacher Sophie Hollingsworth |
Second Max Wondra Aly Vettese Matthew Edwards Julianne Bise Cesar Resendez |
On March 15, Mrs. Milligan kept her promise and camped out on the roof of the school. Students came throughout the evening to check on her, bringing her snacks and to hear her read a book to them from the roof.
Their first Read-a-Thon was a huge success and they can’t wait to do it again next year!
