JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER 2008
- BAHS 2008 graduate Crystal Reeves won the Oklahoma Coaches Association girls’ all-state golf tournament.
- BAHS 2008 graduate Matt Bryan was named the 2008 Oklahoma Coaches Association Wrestler of the Year.
- BAHS quarterback Cale Fulps won the state and national championship in the Top Gun Quarterback Challenge.
- BAHS science teacher Laura Achhireddy has been selected to receive a $5,000 grant from the Cox Connects Foundation. The Cox Foundation grant will help provide resources for the BAHS Robotics program that she started last year.
- The North Intermediate Wind Ensemble under the direction of Aaron Bryan has been selected to perform as an Honor Group at the 2009 winter In-Service Workshop at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Jan. 30, 2009.
- Five new members of the Broken Arrow Athletic Hall of Fame have been inducted into membership. Jessica Eldridge (2003, cross country/track); Kari Harrison Shoemaker (1997, soccer); Micah Lomas (1998, football); Mike Little (1969, football/basketball); and Ron McHenry (1995, football) comprise the 14th class of inductees.
- BAPS August Recognition winners are as follows: Educator of the Month-Chris Nulf (South Intermediate), Employee of the Month-Sue Forschen (ESC), Volunteer of the Month- Shelly Sutterfield (Indian Springs).
- Jaime McCullough, director of Child Nutrition for BAPS, has earned recognition as a school nutrition specialist, the highest credential in her profession.
- The BAHS varsity football team was ranked #37 in the ESPN “Fab 50” top high school football teams in the nation poll during the weeks of September 15-19 and September 22-26.
- Six students from Broken Arrow High School have been named National Merit Semi-finalists in the 54th Annual National Merit Scholarship program. They are Andrew Arvay, Megan Baxter, Derek Brown, Raychal Lurvey, Emily Saffell, and Katherine Wenzel.
- Broken Arrow High School senior Rachel B. Reece was designated a Semifinalist by the National Achievement Scholarship Program in the 45th Annual Achievement Scholarship competition.
- Broken Arrow High School senior Aliena N. Daniels was selected as a 2008-2009 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Scholar.
- Seven Broken Arrow High School seniors were named a “Commended Student” in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Kevin Adams, Ethan Dougherty, Noaa Frederick, Sean McKinney, Andrew Morgan, Aaron Schnautz, and Adam Smith.
- The October BAPS Educator of the Month was Lori Huddleston of Westwood; the Oct. BAPS Employee of the Month is Dot Weins of Lynn Wood; the Oct. BAPS Volunteer of the Month is Lorie Bell of Country Lane.
- Broken Arrow High School student Justin Langston was awarded first place in the 2008-2009 Broken Arrow Rotary Club 4-Way Test Speech competition. Students who compete in this contest are asked to take a subject and apply the Rotary Club’s 4-Way Test: Is it truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Langston used the 4-Way Test to speak to the members of the Broken Arrow Rotary Club about patriotism. Lydeah Hong of BAHS, Whitney Chasteen of BAHS, Cassandra Montano of North Intermediate, and Bruce Haiduk of North Intermediate were selected as runners-up in the contest.
- The BAHS Varsity Volleyball team won the Regional Championship to advance to the state tournament. BAHS upset the state tournament’s top seed Edmond Memorial in the first round. The BAHS Volleyball team head coach is Kari Smith.
- Senior Ali Daniels and junior Julie Werner of Broken Arrow High School received first team All-Frontier Valley Conference honors for volleyball.
- The BAHS Varsity Softball team won the Regional Championship to advance to the state tournament. The BAHS Softball team head coach is Randall King.
- Seniors Sara Murray, Emily Saffell, Nick Grant and Skylar Timm were named the Broken Arrow High School Students of the Month for September.
- Seniors Grace McKnight, Rebecca Morris, David Bacher and Tyler Bridegan were named the Broken Arrow High School Students of the Month for October.
- For the fifth time in eight years, and for the tenth time in school history, the Broken Arrow High School Lady Tigers captured the 6A State Championship in fastpitch softball. The Lady Tigers beat Westmoore 6 to 2 in the championship game final.
- BAHS softball players first baseman Stephanie Brewer, catcher Kelsi Hilderbrandt and pitcher Chelsea Lyon were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Fastpitch Softball team.
- The Broken Arrow High School Marching Band, the Pride of Broken Arrow, swept all awards to claim its second straight Bands of America Super Regional championship in St. Louis, Missouri October 17 and 18. The Pride’s 2008 show “RUNaWAY” dazzled the judges and big crowd at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis to easily outdistance 55 other bands from nine different states for the championship. In addition to taking first place in both the Championship Finals and Preliminary competitions, the Pride also won “Outstanding Music Performance,” “Outstanding Visual Performance,” and “Outstanding General Effect.” The field of teams included two other former Grand National Champions (in addition to the Pride).
- The Broken Arrow High School Marching Band, the Pride of Broken Arrow, swept all awards to claim its seventh straight Oklahoma Bandmasters Association (OBA) 6A State Championship in the competition held at Memorial Stadium at Broken Arrow High School. The Pride bested second place Union by more than eight points and also captured “Outstanding Music Performance,” “Outstanding Visual Performance,” and “Outstanding General Effect.”
- BAHS offensive lineman Alvin Bailey was named a finalist for the 2008 State Farm Mr. Football Oklahoma award given to the top player in large school and small school Oklahoma High School football.
- Broken Arrow Public Schools announced its Teachers of the Year for each individual school site. Winners and their respective schools for the 2008-2009 school year are as follows:

• BAHS senior Arianna Harmon was selected to speak at the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner.
• BA Fire Department Fire Safety Poster contest winners for third graders were as follows: Hannah Bolton (Country Lane), Ricki Cortez (Westwood), Cassidy Bowles (Leisure Park), Grayson Harmon (Arrow Springs), Shafi Rasheed (Vandever), Andrea Kitchen (Spring Creek), Ryan Muttoni (Arrowhead), Kylie Ford (Liberty), Megan Mosinski (Lynn Wood), Brennan Eid (Oak Crest), Dru Denny (Wolf Creek), and Jessica McKinzie (Indian Springs).
NOVEMBER and DECEMBER 2008
- For the 17th consecutive year, the Broken Arrow High Student Council received the Oklahoma Gold Chapter Award, recognizing BAHS STUCO as one of the top 50 Student Council programs in Oklahoma out of approximately 300 schools. This award has been given by the OASC for 17 years.
- BAHS senior Ali Daniels was named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team (Large Class) in volleyball.
- Haskell Middle School student Claire Salazar placed third in the OKAGE (Oklahoma Alliance for Geographic Education) Mapping America Post Card competition. Her very proud social studies teacher, Molly Endsley, said Claire’s achievement also earned Claire $25 and a subscription to National Geographic Magazine.
- Sequoyah counselor Sandy Stone was selected as the BAPS Educator of the Month for October.
- Amy Houston of the Spring Creek cafeteria staff was selected as the BAPS Employee of the Month for October.
- Dawney Davis who supports Centennial Middle School and North Intermediate High School was recognized as the BAPS Volunteer of the Month for October.
- The following BAHS students were selected to the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association All-State Jazz Choir: Arianna Harmon (soprano), Taylor Drake (tenor), Brian Campos (tenor), and Nick Hunter (tenor). They are four of only 24 students chosen for this choir (out of approximately 500 students from around the state that auditioned).
- Oak Crest 5th grader Chaunte’ Springer won third place (in her age and grade category) in the Family & Children’s Services Poster Contest. There were over 600 entries for this Tulsa area contest. Chaunte’ and the other top placers in the contest will see their art work printed in the December edition of Tulsa Kids Magazine.
- Seniors Ashton Leibold, Alexa Ramsey, Adam Hail and Kiel Ward are the Broken Arrow High School Students of the Month for November.
