BAPS mourning loss of HMS Principal Philip Tucker

Broken Arrow Public Schools is mourning the loss of popular and longtime Haskell Middle School Principal Philip Tucker, who passed away at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Tucker, who was also a City Councilor and Broken Arrow’s Vice-Mayor, was himself a Broken Arrow High School graduate.  He began his BAPS career as a science teacher at Haskell in 1984 where he remained until accepting an assistant principal’s position at Jenks in 1995.  Two years later he returned to Haskell and BAPS as an assistant principal.  Then in December, 1997, Tucker was promoted to Principal at Haskell, a position he held up until the time of his death.

“Philip Tucker was an outstanding teacher, administrator, leader, and friend who always worked to do what was best for his school, school district, and community,” Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gary Gerber said. “He will be greatly missed by all of us who had the privilege to know him and benefit from his leadership, wisdom and humor.  He impacted countless young people and made Broken Arrow a better place.”

In addition to his efforts with the school district and city council, Tucker also worked tirelessly in supporting various civic groups and causes including the Broken Arrow Civitans.

“Broken Arrow Public Schools joins the City of Broken Arrow, and BA Civitans in extending our condolences to Phil’s wife Kathleen and their two daughters Megan and Stephanie and their many family members including Phil’s parents, Bob and Peggy Tucker, during this difficult time,” Dr. Gerber said.

The Superintendent also said the district’s crisis team will be on hand at Haskell to support students and staff through the coming days.

“I realize that students and staff at several campuses may need support services, and we will do all that we can to make those available.”

Tucker's life was celebrated and remembered at a Public Memorial Service Tuesday, Feb. 23 at the Broken Arrow Public Schools Performing Arts Center.
