Oliver student wins OK Law Day contest
Oliver Middle School sixth grader Jake Pittman is one of the big winners in the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Oklahoma Law Day-2010 competition.
Pittman’s video was selected as the top entry in the YouTube category of the Oklahoma Law Day contest that gave students from across the state the opportunity to showcase their understanding of the significance of legal issues and laws under the 2010 theme: “Our History Milestones in the Law.”
Pittman’s video, which was originally produced for a class project in Oliver Social Studies teacher Justin Ennis’ class, highlights the 1960’s case, “Tinker vs. Des Moines”.
Pittman’s video detailed the three Iowa students (two high school and one junior high) involved in “Tinker vs. Des Moines” as the students successfully took their fight for the right to wear black arm bands at school in silent protest of the Vietnam War all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Oklahoma Supreme Chief Justice James E. Edmondson presented Pittman with a cash prize of $500 for his first place effort.
Nearly 1,500 students from across the state took part in the competition that also awarded prizes in the categories of coloring, drawing, collage, diodrama, creative writing and creative free for all.
