Middle school students excel at District History Day competition

Haskell Middle School students won the Sweepstakes Trophy, and students from Sequoyah and Centennial Middle Schools also enjoyed great success at the annual District VII History Day academic competition at Tulsa Community College (for area students).

Students who participate in History Day choose historic topics related to the annual theme (this year’s theme is Innovation in History: Impact and Change).  Students then conduct several months of research and present their findings in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a web site.

Haskell won the Sweepstakes Trophy for being the school with the most student success at event as 23 HMS students placed in the top three in their respective categories at the District VII activity to earn a trip to the State competition (held in May in Oklahoma City at the State Capitol).

Moving on to the State Level for History Day from Haskell are Alex Philips, Alexandria Platter, Ally Bickle, Hailey  Dugan (First Place-Group Performance); Jay Mancini, Kate Oldham, Miranda Sherwood, Kara Poindexter (Second Place- Group Performance); Colleen Burkett and Amber Obermaier (Third Place-Group Performance);  Casey Dubose and Chris Buckles (First Place-Group Website); Preston Vargus (Second Place-Individual Website); Austin Catlin (Third Place- Individual Website); Tyler Millan and Jonah Garrison (Second Place-Group Documentary); Maegan Rollow, Erin Burkett, and Briana Agimudie (Third Place-Group Documentary); Frank Gump (Third Place-Individual Documentary); Leah Chambers and Sierra DeVries (Second Place-Group Exhibit); and Rachel Ross (Third Place-Historical Paper).

Haskell social studies teacher Molly Endsley said the students wanted to do well at the event and honor the memory of their late Principal, Philip Tucker, who had recently passed away.

“The kids did want to honor Mr. Tucker.  We wore yellow ribbons as lanyards in memory of him.  So I guess you could say we did dedicate the day to him.”

Centennial Middle School students advancing to State are Michelle Marx, Lauren Volpe, and Margaret Bond (First Place-Group Exhibit); Ella Spencer and Emily Goodwin (Third Place-Group Exhibit); Dominique Barnes (Second Place-Individual Documentary); Emma Kasishke, Anna Kharabora, and Lyly Van (Second Place-Group Website).

Sequoyah will send three students to State in the History Day competition including Lauren James (First Place-Historical Paper), Brianna Seale (Second Place-Historical Paper), and Jacob Humpleby (Second Place-Individual Exhibit).

First and Second Place finishers at the state level qualify for the national competition held at the University of Maryland in June.
