BAHS wins district debate championship, five qualify for Nationals
For the third time in the past six years, Broken Arrow High School is the home of the District Debate champion.
The BAHS Debate team bested 29 other schools to claim the district championship at the event held at the Northeast campus of Tulsa Community College.
In addition, five BAHS Debate team students earned a trip to the National Debate Tournament in Kansas City in June with exceptional performances in their event at the district tournament.
Qualifying for Nationals from BAHS are Jeremy Barnes (Lincoln Douglas Debate), Alex McCaffery and Nikki Roberts (Public Forum Debate), and Nick McCaffery and Lucas Trujillo (Public Forum Debate).
BAHS Speech and Debate Coach Ashley Bowser participated in the Nationals in Kansas City as a student 16 years ago. Now he will take a talented team of Tigers to coach in the Nationals.
“The District Tournament was true testament to hard work and countless hours that these students put in for this competition,” Bowser said. “Only three students /teams from each division of debate represent the Eastern half of Oklahoma at the National Tournament.”
Bowser said the Nationals bound students won’t be advised of the topics they will be debating until May 1, meaning the students will have only about a month to prepare to compete against the top debaters in the nation.
