9.2 Broken Arrow Public School's District Wellness Policy

Local education agencies participating in a program authorized by the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C.1751et seq) or the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (42 U.S.C. 1771et seq) shall establish a local school wellness policy.

Broken Arrow Public Schools is committed to providing a school environment that encourages nutritious eating habits and appropriate physical activity as a means of promoting academic success and encouraging lifelong health.

The school district desires to assist students in developing skills that promote healthy habits regarding eating and physical activity. Toward that end, wellness education will be addressed at each school site through a variety of means including but not limited to nutrition education, nutrition standards, physical activity opportunities, and other appropriate site-specific health activities.

Nutrition Education will be offered to all students, parents and staff members throughout the school year. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to make healthy choices through interpretation of food labels, portion control, and understanding the link between good diet and exercise. Principals and teachers will support the nutrition education by providing for appropriate use of building resources. This may be accomplished through physical education classrooms, core curriculum classrooms, morning announcements, professional development, PTA or school news letters, flyers, community education, or other activities deemed appropriate for the site. Principals and/or teachers will keep proper documentation concerning the scheduling and completion of nutrition education activities.

Nutrition Guidelines will be followed according to the Federal and State standards for the Child Nutrition Program. Foods made available on school campuses through the Child Nutrition Program will offer children nutritious choices such as more fresh fruit/vegetables, low fat entrees, snacks that do not compete with the meal offerings and more grab-n-go healthy meal choices. Parents/guardians will be requested to support the district’s nutrition efforts by considering nutritional quality when selecting student meals brought from home and/or snacks which may be donated for special school or classroom events. Principals and teachers will support the nutrition guidelines by assuring that healthy options are provided in school concessions, parties and events.

The healthy and safe schools committee will annually review the school sites efforts and make suggestions to principals.

The Instructional Division and Principals will be responsible for assuring that physical activity opportunities offered to students will be consistent with state physical education standards for students. Opportunities will be provided at each school site for students to learn skills which promote physical activity as a means of maintaining life-long wellness.

Additional site-specific health activities may be offered according to the physical, material, and personnel resources of each site.

These goals, accompanying guidelines and the recommendations of the healthy and safe schools committee will be reviewed annually by the District-Level Wellness Committee and monitored by the superintendent’s designee.
