Section 10.0- Student Activities

10.9 Student Participation in Activities-Secondary Schools

The Broken Arrow Schools provide an extensive program of educational opportunities for all students. This includes a strong academic program which is enhanced by an activity program designed to give every student an opportunity to participate, to compete, to develop leadership and citizenship skills, and to experience success in worthwhile projects.

To insure a balance between the curricular and extra-curricular components of the program, students will not be permitted to be absent from the classroom more than ten (10) times for any one class period of each school year to participate in school-approved activities.

An Internal Activities Review Committee shall be appointed each year by the Board of Education. The purpose of the committee shall be to review and recommend to the Board of Education any exceptions to or deviations from the activities policy, and to review student-initiated appeals.

Activity absences exempted from this policy shall be the following:

1. Counseling, health, and administrative services
2. Testing services
3. Required assemblies
4. Required meetings of student governing and advisory boards
5. All activities identified in regulations of the Oklahoma State Department of Education guidelines.

Any student whose activities in school-sponsored or school-sanctioned activities which require more than ten (10) absences, may appeal through the principal of the school to the Internal Activities Review Committee for an exception to the regulations.

Each school shall be responsible for establishing a record-keeping system in order to maintain an accurate account of class periods missed by each student and the reason therefore.

Complaints which cannot be resolved at the local level will follow the procedure set forth in regulations of the Oklahoma State Department of Education guidelines on Attendance/Activities Regulations.
