Broken Arrow Public School District offers an outstanding Fine Arts program in grades K-12. We have some of the most highly qualified educators in northeast Oklahoma as well as parental and community support and excellent support from our local school board and local administrators.
Elementary Fine Arts is a wonderful program that provides music and visual art to children in grades K-5 on a rotation basis.
Students in elementary receive visual art and vocal music instruction a minimum of twice a week on a rotation basis. All elementary sites present a 5th grade musical program during the school year to allow the students an opportunity to perform in a production. All elementary sites offer a select choir for 5th grade which rehearses before and after school in addition to the class instruction in vocal music. Each spring all 14 elementary sites bring their select choirs for an all city Choral Festival. The festival has a choir numbering around 425 students. This is an annual event held each spring.
Many of the music specialists are certified in Kodaly and Orff methodology. These two music methods work on developing music literacy in young children. Several of our teachers and their students participate in the Orff Festival held each February in the greater Tulsa area.
Our visual art instructors provide student art work for their own school sites as well as participate in a monthly art display at the Broken Arrow Education Service Center. The visual art instructors also host a citywide student art show each spring showcasing the work of students in grades 1-5 with approximately 1,500 pieces of work. This Gallery Gala is held at the Southeast Tulsa Technology Center.
Broken Arrow Public Schools also participate in the Artists in the Schools Program which is designed for hands-on participatory learning. Each workshop and presentation is intended to enrich aesthetic sensitivities, offer cultural perspectives in the arts and enhance the school’s cultural activities. Musicians, actors, dancers, storytellers, visual artists, writers and cultural presenters provide an exciting component to teacher’s curriculum. Harwelden Institute is modeled after the Lincoln Center Institute for Aesthetic Education. A repertory of live performances and visual arts experiences are available each year for schools, when their classroom teachers have participated in summer training. During the summer session, teachers and professional artists come together to preview the chosen repertory and design curriculum.
Vocal music is offered as an elective in grades 6-12. The middle school programs offer performance choirs as well as general music classes. The Intermediate highs offer Concert Choir, Girls Select Choir/Show Choir and Mixed Show Choir/A Cappella Choir. At the high school level, students may enroll in A Cappella Choir, Chamber Choir and the all time state champions, Tiger Rhythm Show Choir. Students can also enroll in Pre-AP and AP Music Theory at the high school level. The secondary vocal music department participates in district and state contests each year with solo, ensemble and choirs.
Many of the art classes do projects with the Partners in Education, provide art work for the school display areas, and do work for community projects.
Drama is offered in grades 7 through 12. The middle school drama department offers Theater Arts I and II as well as advanced drama for 8th grade students. Each of the five middle schools present plays each semester. The intermediate high students present a theater production each semester at the North Intermediate High School Auditorium. The high school presents a drama in the fall, a musical in the spring as well as a student showcase of theater presentations.
